Week In Football Show: Bournemouth In The Premier League!

I opened this week’s show by paying tribute to the amazing AFC Bournemouth who are all but promoted to the Premier League. The show was filmed on the eve of Bournemouth’s clash with Bolton which they went on to win comfortably 3-0 and mark the biggest moment in the club’s history. Although I’m a Huddersfield Town fan, I grew up in Bournemouth from the age of 9 and can’t help but feel happy for the club.

It’s all the more astonishing considering just 6 years ago, Bournemouth were in dire financial trouble literally minutes away from liquidation. A “Save The Cherries” campaign was launched as locals and fans dug into their pockets to save the club and chairman Jeff Mostyn wrote a last gasp 100,000 pound cheque to save the club from debtors. Even worse, the club were deducted a massive 17 points for their financial situation as they fell into League 2 and only survived staying in the Football League by the skin of their teeth thanks in large part to manager Eddie Howe.

Now unbelievably, Howe has steered them to The Premier League in style with Bournemouth finishing as The Championship’s leading scorers with well over 100 goals. Since those dark days, Bournemouth have enjoyed an injection of cash from Russian magnate Maxim Demin but it’s not as if they gone wild with it and Howe has spent very little in guiding Bournemouth from being dead and buried in League 2. It’s a genuine fairy tale in modern football and only a 20-0 defeat at Charlton at the weekend can deny them Premier League football next season.

Oh, and we also talked about Barcelona v Bayern Munich and Real Madrid v Juventus in the Champions League semi finals, how one Spanish player wore a swim cap during a game and analyse why Pep Guardiola’s pants ripped against Porto. But it all pales in comparison. Enjoy the show.the week in football - bournemouth promoted to premier league

The Week In Football: March 10th

The latest Week in Football show is now online. This week we talked about the Copa del Rey semi finals, Messi’s penalty taking (I controversially suggest the problem is penalties are simply too easy for him and he should start taking them with his head). We also looked ahead to the Champions League and I’m also pleased to say I was right about Chelsea going out of the Champions League to PSG and Arsenal beating Man Utd in the FA Cup 2-1. Don’t talk to me about the Porto v Basel result though.

I was also on the February 17th show which I forgot to post. On this show I appeared alongside good friend and Boston United fan David Holmes and waxed lyrical about the impact of Cruyff on FC Barcelona and Catalunya. I also got confused between Ateltico Madrid’s masked monster Godin and midfield maestro Koke:nick mead week in football feb 22

Week In Football Feb 3

The most recent episode of the Week In Football has just been aired. This week we were joined by Catalan football journalist Jordi Gracia and talked about the lovely Sepp Blatter, Barça’s pulsating game against Villarreal, Bale getting booed by his own fans yet again and made some predictions about the Madrid derby at the weekend (I’ve gone for 2-1 Atletico).
