It’s just been announced that Catalan airline Spanair has gone bankrupt late this evening. All flights are cancelled although they have released a statement saying that those affected will be offered reduced flight transit on Air Europa, Iberia and Vueling flights. (28/1 13:00 Update: The statement is now offline maybe due to high traffic number [...]

BBC News – What really caused the eurozone crisis?
Posted in Blog, Economics, Spain on December 22, 2011 | Leave a Comment »
So what really caused the crisis? There was a big build-up of debts in Spain and Italy before 2008, but it had nothing to do with governments. Instead it was the private sector – companies and mortgage borrowers – who were taking out loans. Interest rates had fallen to unprecedented lows in southern European countries [...]
My Voddler “Spotify for films” review

This review was published on OnSoftware. Voddler has the potential to be a great film service although the lack of film choice in the Spanish pilot version and general usability still need much improvement for it to be really popular. Just under two years ago we were on the first blogs to test and review [...]
Messi’s awkward post match interview
Posted in Blog, Spain on December 18, 2011 | Leave a Comment »
Congratulations to Barça on a stunning performance against Santos to cement their place as the best club in the world and surely one of the best of all time. Equally entertaining was Lionel Messi’s post match interview with some very excited Japanese TV hosts: While we’re on the subject of Messi, the analytics stats for [...]
Catalonia votes to ban bullfighting
Posted in Blog, Spain on July 28, 2010 | 6 Comments »
Today Catalonia can take a momentous step forward in finally banning one of the most barbaric aspects of Spanish culture. I used to live next to the bull fighting ring in Monumental and it was clear that for many years, it had nothing to do with “culture”. It’s mainly used a grotesque tourist attraction that [...]
106 years old today

Thought I’d take the opportunity to commemorate this day as I’ve been reading Homage To Catalonia again. George Orwell would have been 106 today and his account of his experience in the Spanish Civil War is one of the best and most honest accounts you’ll find on the subject. There are obviously many different books [...]
Spain grants passports to International Brigades

I’ve always had huge admiration for the International Brigade volunteers – 2,500 of which were from the UK – who left their comfortable lives behind to go to Spain and fight against Franco during the Spanish Civil War. It’s lovely to see the few that are still alive were honoured yesterday by the Spanish government [...]

Spain falling into deflation?

Even the New York Times is keeping a close eye on what’s happening in Spain noting that falling prices are a worrying sign of deflation that characterised the great depression. With the combination of rising unemployment and falling prices, economists fear Spain may be in the early grip of deflation, a hallmark of both the [...]

As the sister of a guerrilla leader, Emilia Girón was deemed unfit to bring up her son, who was taken from her days after his birth 70 years ago. “He was a boy and I wanted to call him Jesús,” she recalled in a recent documentary, The Missing Children of Francoism. “But they took him [...]
