Don’t load up on guns and bring your friends

obama-guns…says Obama according to the Chicago Sun Times. Apparently, gun sales have rocketed almost 50 percent since Obama got elected according to the FBI’s National Instant Background Check System (what in George Orwell’s name is THAT by the way?).

Obama has tried to pacify gun owners by stating that he’s not against gun ownership although he went on record as saying he favours a handgun ban in 1996 but later claimed one of his staffers had said that in error.

The fact that high rates of gun ownership = high rate of deaths from guns is hardly in doubt. Just check out this graph at Gun Control Network which shows the USA literally flying off the scale when it comes to this fact (although what the hell is Switzerland doing up there?). I think Michael Moore made the point pretty well too in Bowling for Columbine.

I’m not quite sure what gun owners hope to achieve by panic buying guns either. If Obama does dare impose some kind of ban – which based on the overwhelming evidence would make sense even if it does violate the Second Amendment – are they all going to reject it and get together and storm the White House toting machine guns? If there is a ban, they’d presumably have to give them up anyway so it just seems like a waste of money.

  1. Switzerland is there too because every household has to have a weapon by law. All citizens are responsible for civil defence, you see.

  2. well they don’t have a standing army, you see… so every adult’s obliged to take part in 2 weeks national service each year and they all need to have a gun. Not a bad idea.

  3. Orwell wrote that a Britain where everyone had a gun under the bed (i.e. during the war years) was a Britain where an authoritarian government could never seize power.

He was obviously counting on the generally much higher prevalence of left-wing sympathies than seems evident now but I think his point that the populace cannot be so easily cowed by the state if they too are armed is probably true. Unfortunately, everyone having a gun under the bed means that the bad people do too… but there are fewer of them.

“That rifle hanging on the wall of the working-class flat
or labourer’s cottage is the symbol of democracy.
It is our job to see that it stays there.”

  4. He had a point. I remember the Louis Theroux documentary where he went to see all the red necks in the US who said they were prepared to take arms-up against the government although I doubt the government are quaking in their boots.

I’m still against it though even if it was a way to keep the government in check. There’d be lots of needless gun related deaths and threating the state with violence is not the answer to political problems.

I would agree to everyone in the country being armed with a snooker ball in a sock though.
